THE SUNDAY TIMES SPORT BOOK OF THE YEAR

A retirement statement from a sports star rarely causes a flicker, but Nicole Cooke went out as she rode her bike giving it her all. The contrast could not have been greater - as Lance Armstrong, a fraudster backed by many corporate sponsors and feted by presidents, was about to deliver a stage-managed confession to Oprah, so a young woman from a small village in Wales took aim.
She too had been a cyclist, the only rider ever to have become World and Olympic champion in the same year, and the first British cyclist to have been ranked World No.1, but as a woman in a man's sport, her exploits gained little recognition and brought no riches. She too had ridden through this dark period for the sport when drug-taking was everywhere. Nicole Cooke spoke up for those who had taken a very different path to Lance and his team-mates.
In her frank and outspoken autobiography, Cooke reveals the real story behind British cycling's rise to global dominance. With a child's dreams of success, she left home at 18 to pursue her goals in Italy. Broken contracts, unpaid wages, a horrendous injury and drugs cheats were just some of the challenges she faced, even before she lined up to take on her opponents. The Breakaway is a book that will not only inspire all those who read it, but which also asks some serious questions about the way society regards women's sport.

The Breakaway eBook Nicole Cooke

Completely lays bare how British Cycling's approach of "marginal gains" is geared only towards those blessed with a penis at birth ... a approach with an even brighter light shined upon it in recent news.

The Breakaway eBook Nicole Cooke Reviews

The story of Nichole Cooke, arguably the greatest cyclist of her generation, winner of multiple world titles despite the wholesale conspiracy and/or incompetence of the British Cycling authorities, is equally inspiring and exasperating. I was most impressed by how her parents were able to foster Nicole's development without creating either a hyper-competitive environment or forcing her to specialize on one sport. I used to both teach and coach (not cycling) and have seen too many children so focused on winning - or more accurately, not losing - that few derive any pleasure from participating, and most end up quitting sports entirely. Given the absurd barriers Nicole faced beginning when she was still an adolescent, I think her ability to persevere largely reflects the extraordinary emotional base that her parents, uncle, and other adults outside of the cycling bureaucracy helped her to develop. A child on a highly regimented training program who never rode simply for fun would never have lasted.
A must read, particularly for any MAMIL that might not have an intimate knowledge of road cycling. Hopefully the cycling establishment will read and hang their heads in shame. You can't change the past but you can learn from it and I hope women's cycling is given a fair crack of the whip and due respect going forward - including a minimum wage for women cyclists.
A trailblazer for women in the sports of cycle racing, Nicole Cooke’s memoir, The Breakaway (Simon and Schuster UK, 2014) begins with a young girl’s dream to win the Tour de France and the Olympic road race. But as she pointed out in her retirement speech in 2013, there was no clear path for her to begin this dream “At the age of 12 one is unaware of the problems ahead. One expects there to be an infrastructure for both boys and girls to develop and demonstrate their talents; to nurture them. One does not expect that nothing is available if you are a girl or that worse still, girls will be specifically excluded, not allowed to compete. It is somewhat of a handicap trying to demonstrate just how good you are on a bike when you are not allowed to ride.”

Her memoir reveals how a winner is born and how she strives to achieve and win with integrity and confidence. It also does a great job of providing young girls interested in sports with the inner-thoughts of a sportswoman as she races to the finish line – perhaps the most exciting parts of Cooke’s narrative.

Her career as a professional cyclist proves to girls and women that there are great advantages that come with prevailing as a sportswoman bent on winning despite all the sexist and ridiculous barriers placed before her. But her strength –physical and mental – stands as a symbol of female power, showing little girls who ride their own pink bikes that hard work, integrity, and determination are the qualities inherent of winners empowered by their own volition. Nicole Cooke describes herself and her journey as a World and Olympic champion best in her closing chapter “The winner in me was never satisfied with anything but the best.” Words all little girls and women should live by.
Fantastic read and a great example of how we maximise the opportunities life gives in spite of people.
A really brave piece of writing, and really inspirational. I had no idea that this kind of discrimination was so rife in the cycling industry (and potentially still is).
Such an honest book. I don't believe all that she says about British Cycling management but on second thoughts I do. Compulsory reading for supporters of male cycling - the women know it already. Signed A Man
