A wrong turn down a remote Florida backwoods highway turns into the ride of a lifetime for Emily Weaver, a university librarian, when she mysteriously discovers a manuscript written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, dated years after the beloved author’s death. Emily unwittingly begins a treasure hunt in a world that is as beautiful as it is dangerous, and it is a hunt that could not only change her life, but the landscape of the entire literary world. Is it really possible that the renowned author of The Yearling faked her own death in 1953? Parading through the scrub country in Rawling’s seemingly fresh footsteps, Emily must separate fact from fiction as she discovers more than one secret world, opens up her heart to new friendships and challenges, encounters ghosts from the past, and puts her own life in danger to uncover the truth. A Grand Day to Get Lost not only resurrects a bold literary icon but also explores the emotional landscape of loss, survival, and forgiveness in a world where anything is possible for those who dare to risk and follow their dreams.

This book could have been written in half the pages so as to be more riveting...unlike MKR books that you cannot put down yet never want to end...this one dragged on...and on....and on - never seeming to get to the point. Monotonous dialogue, repetitive scenes and occurrences...just a waste of time. Sad because the premise is enthralling.

Having lived 30 miles from the MKR estate for more than 30 years, visiting it almost annually and having read every MKR book over and over...I was so excited about this one and so utterly disappointed.

The author did very little research on our area or she would have been more accurate in depictions of it. i.e. Cross Creek is on the Alachua/Marion County line. In both counties there is a sheriff who oversees hundreds of employees and those 2 sheriff's offices are located nowhere near Cross Creek or the little hamlets that surround it...but instead are located in the cities of Ocala and Gainesville ...which are thriving cities...not the little podunk burbs she describes them as! Insulting to read!
None of the little towns described in the area have police depts so investigations would be done by deputies and detectives which number in the hundreds in both counties. Interesting that a book supposed to be about literary archeology and research would be written by someone who did none of that in writing this! If you plan to use actual places in your historical fiction...then at least accurately portray them.

I have been a journalist living and working in both Gainesville and Ocala since the mid 1980s. At the time of Silvers rape, Ocala had 2 large hospitals with very large and competent state attorneys office, rape victim policies and task forces etc. In the area this book takes place...patients would go to Gainesville hospitals which are much closer than Ocala and...include Shands Teaching Hospital at the Univ. Of Florida...one of the best and biggest teaching hospitals in the entire country!

On top of this, the inconsistencies in the story made me wonder if the author ever read her own pages? At one point she changes a characters name 2x in 21 pages! You can't remember the name of a character you created? She starts out as Betsy, becomes Betty and then goes back to Betsy...and how did that get past editors? Emily's car goes from being a sedan...then its a tiny little car and several times described as a truck...how many people wrote this book?

Reading the postive reviews I wonder if these folks have ever read MKR works or good literature to think highly of this...perhaps if all you read are Harlequin Romance!!

Have never heard of this author...bought this book because of the theme of MKR...don't need to read any of her other works as this might very well be one of the worst novels I have ever read. I bought the actual book...not kindle. It appears to be self published and for good reason because cannot imagine any editing staff passing a nod on content, style, grammar, continuity, location and historical accuracy etc.

Very disappointed that Amazon would sell a book so poorly done... and feel the description of it should have indicated it was self published.

A Grand Day To Get Lost Kris Radish 9780615781716 Books Reviews

I read this for book club. The premise is intriguing imagine if a book penned by one of America's favorite authors AFTER they supposedly died is "discovered." I use quotation marks because the plot revolves around trying to determine if the book is legit. Like Emily, the main character, I'm at an age in life where I question life decisions I've made and wonder how to infuse creativity, joy, and aliveness into my so-called golden years. The main character is something of a timid soul, though, and I found that hard to relate to. And the suspense that Radish tries to create through the actions of a seemingly threatening minor character loses steam. And I found myself more interested in the backstory and future of the other characters than I did of Emily. In fact, the best part of the book for me was the supporting cast, which includes the vivid descriptions of the central Florida setting. If I hadn't been asked to read it for my book club, I wouldn't have read it.
Kris Radish once again penned another can't put down, amazing tale about real women - strong, believable women. Chock full of adventure and suspense - oozing with history and descriptions that will make you want to pack a bag (a small bag), toss your cares to the wind, and head to Florida, Kris (who makes everyone feel as if we are on a first name basis), transports the reader immediately into the whirlwind adventures of three amazing women on a quest to learn anything and everything about Marjorie K Rawlings, the beloved author of The Yearling.
Her eloquent descriptions of people, places and the emotions we all share will have you savoring every page ~ every word!
Buy this book! You will be moved to laughter, tears and laughter again and again.
I have been a fan since I picked up "Elegant Gathering of White Snows" years ago. I have read anything and everything that Kris Radish has written. I stop people in book stores and put her books in their hands. Same at used book sales at the Library. I loan them to everyone with a threat of death if they are not returned.
This book is by far (so far, as I am not finished with " A Grand Day To Get Lost" yet), one of my favorites.
You can tell Ms Radish fell in love with Florida herself and now writes about it through those eyes. I love that all of the characters are alive in my head and as the book lays on my bed I am afraid something will happen before I get back to it and read on.
READ THIS BOOK! Your life will be richer because of it. Trust me.
I just finished last night and still loved this book. One of the review's mentioned that people either love or hate Kris's books. And I think this may be true. But I for one am on the LOVE side.
I am finding from various reviews and from my book club, that people either LOVE Kris Radish books, or have a rather strong negative reaction. Haven't found the common denominator, but I am a lover!
I started with Annie Freeman's Traveling Funeral, and now I have finished reading A Grand Day to Get Lost.
I wished all the way through the book that I could be in Florida with the main characters. I enjoyed the unfolding of the secrets, both past and present. I related to Emma as she rediscovered her adventuresome self.
I do think the book went on a little too long, and got a tad bored with some of the homilies about life and love, etc. But this did not detract from my overall pleasure in meeting the folks near Cross Creek, FL. ANd I definitely have to reread The Yearling and read Cross Creek!
